The flower that produces the vanilla bean lasts for only one day so growers have to inspect the flowers daily. Pure vanilla is also the second most expensive spice in the world, after saffron. It is also a less-known fact that only the mellipona bee, found in Central America, can pollinate the vanilla vine. All around the world, humans have taken to pollinate the plant by using a wooden needle.
